
Living Museum; Cultural Progression of Hip Hop Culture

This production will break down the historical and cultural relevance of the four main Hip Hop elements. We will explore through performances, mixed media and narration, the elements of hip hop culture and how they relate to Black/Latino history. Various artists, youth and community activists will come together to create the Living Museum; Cultural Progression of Hip Hop Culture.
The production will consist of three sections per element.
Emceeing:
- Oral Storytelling-“Follow the Drinking Gourd”
- Interpretation of story and song performed by youth.
- Passing history/hidden messages from generation to generation during slavery times
- Spoken Word-Last Poets “The Revolution will not be Televised”
- Local spoken word poets perform their version of this poem.
- Passing history/hidden messages from generation to generation during Civil Rights Movements.
- Emceeing-Tastee Emcees 80s Hip Hop Movements
- Local emcees will perform a rap on the 80s hip hop social movements.
- Passing history/hidden messages from generation to generation during the 80s Hip Hop Social Movements.
Break Dancing:
- Capoeira- Corpo e Movimento
- Historical breakdown of Capoeira and demonstration by local Corpo e Movimento.
- Passing history/hidden messages from generation to generation during slavery times.
- Jitterbug/Swing Dances-Youth performance
- Historical breakdown of swing dances and demonstration by local youth.
- Similarity of dance moves to today’s break dancing moves.
- Break Dancing-Motion Disorderz
- Historical breakdown of break dancing and demonstration by local youth.
- Ties to capoeira and swing moves
Graffiti:
- Hieroglyphics-Slideshow
- Historical breakdown of hieroglyphics and slideshow of examples.
- Passing history/hidden messages from generation to generation during slavery times.
- Post No Bills-Anti-War Propaganda/Artists’ Hidden Messages
- Historical breakdown of the term “post no bills” and slideshow of examples of art and posters with hidden meanings.

- Subway Art/Graffiti- Performance by local Aerosol Artist.
- Historical breakdown of the writing on walls and slideshow of examples.

DJ:
- African/Latino Drumming- Performance by local drummer and youth.
- Historical breakdown of drumming and demonstration.
- Beat Machine/Beat box-Performance by youth.
- Demonstration of beat boxing and a live beat machine.
- DJ-Performance by local DJ
- Historical breakdown of the DJ and a demonstration of turntable tricks.
